First-time visitors can be regarded as the most vital aspect of growing your church. The way you handle first-time visitors can either produce positive or negative church growth. However, spending time with your first-time visitor after a service in order to get to know them better will help you identify potential growth opportunities in your church, as well as possibly identify any issues that may exist.

When chatting with your newcomer for the first time, here are some questions that may help you understand them better and provide you with actionable insights for your church.

  1. How did you hear about our church?

  2. What made you visit us today?

  3. Have you been to any churches before ours?
    1. Have you ever been involved as a volunteer or leader of a church?

    2. Is there anything you found particularly helpful with today’s service?

    3. What did you think of the worship session?

    4. What did you think of the prayers?

    5. Is the environment comfortable? (not too hot and not too cold)

    6. How long have you been a believer?

    7. How did you come to faith?

    8. Are you aware of our home cell groups? (or any other item you feel may add value here)

Remember to avoid asking questions that may lead to them feeling as though you are assessing their tithing potential. Questions such as “what do you do for a living?” and “Whereabouts do you stay?” will leave the first-time visitor feeling suspicious.
